Like a beacon seen shining from many points in the West End, Meldrum the Mover's blazing neon sign has become one of the important icons of life in Notre Dame de Grâce.
From high atop the stately Meldum warehouse and office building at the corner of Sherbrooke Street and Walkley Avenue, the giant red and green illuminated display has been advertising the family-run business since the late 1940s, according to Tom Filgiano, Meldrum's president and a resident of the West End.
Like St. Joseph's Oratory, another famous Montreal landmark which is visible from numerous vantage points throughout the city, the Meldrum sign can also be seen for miles, especially from southwest areas such as LaSalle.
"When it was originally built way back then, you could actually see it from downtown Montreal," Filgiano says, adding that the view was obliterated by the many highrises put up since then.
Meldrum takes great pride in making sure that the sign remains fully illuminated. "We have a service contract that we have with a major sign company, and it's their job to make sure that it's always lit," he says.
