With more than 250 players and a dozen teams, the Canadian Corporate Soccer League might be the biggest local soccer association you’ve never heard of.It’s also quite possibly the league with the most noble pursuit.

“Studies have shown that a majority of children with weight problems are from families with inactive parents. We want to change this trend, starting with the inactive home. Parents need to be a positive role model to our future generation,” the league declares on its website, www.corporatesoccer.ca. “The CCSL believes that … corporations must participate in the healthy living habits and contribute to a better work-life balance of all its employees. Promoting good health and an active lifestyle will contribute to a healthier workforce and reduce the ballooning costs of health care delivery.”

That might seem like a mouthful or jargon-like platitudes, but have a conversation with league president Albert Zbily and you’ll start to believe.

Zbily runs the league with enthusiasm and clearly believes in its mission statement. “Our goal is to play with purpose. The CCSL started with the idea that corporations should encourage their employees, both male and female, to adopt a healthy lifestyle, so that they can act as positive role models to future generations,” he told The Monitor. “Our purpose is to encourage a healthy lifestyle; encourage team-building skills, encourage networking; and to promote amateur sport. “We are a non-profit, co-ed, recreational league promoting soccer as a healthy part to any good cardio-vascular exercise.”

Never straying from the message, Zbily went on to clarify his goals for growth of the league, which plays out of NDG’s Concordia Stadium with games also taking place at McGill’s Percival Molson Stadium downtown. “We doubled in size from (last year to this year) and we would like to keep expanding, with an eye to expanding divisions to other cities across Canada,” Zbily said. “The idea would be to have a Champions League-style draw with champions from various cities playing in one big tournament once a year.”

Currently featuring such diverse companies as Ergo-Expert, Standard Life Insurance, Shell Oil and the Aldo Group, Zbily has clear intentions of creating a lasting league.
