Dear Monitor Readers,
The Monitor and its parent company Transcontinental Media, are taking a great leap forward with this, the last printed edition of the Monitor. The great leap forward is to a web-only daily edition, with breaking local news, sports and features and all the columnists and contributors you've come to know and love: Nat Lauzon, Bram Eisenthal, Noah Sidel, Martin C. Barry and, of course, Editor Toula Foscolos.
Ceasing to print the Monitor on newsprint also allows us to be proactive in terms of cost-effectiveness. Yes, it's costly to print a weekly newspaper, but we feel it in more than dollar costs. The trees used to make the paper, the emissions used by our drivers in delivering it and the fact our website has room for limitless contributions from citizens and opinion leaders made it a decision that we felt was best for the community and its media interests. Our site, www.themonitor.ca, will continue to be your mirror and window on the communities of N.D.G., Cote St. Luc, Montreal West and Hampstead.
No longer will you have to venture outside in the snow to fetch your paper, or wander around the neighborhood to locate a copy if yours was not delivered. Just fire up your computer, grab a cup of coffee and spend a little time with one of your favourite local writers.
Like Slate magazine, the Christian Science Monitor, Infoworld and Deadspin, we will bring you local information daily and offer a smart mix of opinion, features and the arts.
Got an opinion? A thought on the new web-only format? A question? Deeply held grievance? We want to hear from you. A thought on borough or city hall affairs? We want to hear from you. Did your son or daughter's hockey or soccer team win a tournament? You bet we want to hear from you, and publish your photos as well!
No news is too small, and no event too local for us to mention on our site.
