Each Wednesday at 2 p.m., a recent film will be screened in the Westmount Room. For the last movie of the series, Espions, a special guest will be present: Brendan Kelly, film critic for the Gazette, will discuss the film in conversation after the showing.
Kelly, who lives in Westmount, has written for the Gazette for seven years. He also comments on film for the CBC. “He’s a well-known voice for films,” said Outreach Librarian Donna Lach, “so I think people will be really excited to hear him.”
Lach said that she believed the movies she had chosen for the film series will provoke discussion among the audience. She noted that the library is showing the films in the afternoon, rather than the evening, to allow for lengthy conversations afterward. “It’s fun to see a film, but it’s more fun to discuss it afterwards,” she said.
DVDs of the films shown in August will be added to the library’s own film collection, also overseen by Lach. “I like film, and it’s the part of my job that I enjoy the most,” she said. “It gives me a chance to broaden my horizons.”
Lach is proud of the range of the Library’s DVD collection, noting that it includes classics, foreign films, and filmed presentations of operas. “The collection is there for people not afraid to try new things,” she said. “I feel personally attached to it. I feel like it’s my collection!”
