The atmosphere was a relaxing one and every single conversation taking place was about the taste, smell, or fermentation of tea, which is apt seeing as the second edition of the Tea Festival at Cha Guan, La Maison du Thé, on Monkland Avenue was unfolding.

For two days, last week, everybody who dropped by the store tasted the 12 new spring teas introduced, some of which were white, green, wulong, red, puerh and even iced tea.

People also learned how to prepare the tea at home, through a Chinese tea-brewing demonstration by Daniel NG, the owner of the shop. The aim was “to show people the Chinese tea ceremony”, he said. He prepared a green tea, a wulong tea and a puerh tea and answered several questions from the 10 to 15 people who were watching.

The inside of the shop had temporarily been modified for the Festival: there were no tables. People were standing in front of Daniel NG who prepared tea, while answering their questions; mainly about the differences between all the various kinds of tea and their benefits. “Tea has a lot of different health benefits,” said regular customer Bianti Curly. “Depending on how I’m feeling, I’m going to drink a different kind of tea.” “It was really interesting,” said Audrey Laplante, after tasting several teas and watching their preparation. “The place is welcoming”, added her friend Annie Archambault.

Hilary Farmer came to the Tea Festival because she loves tea and has “a real interest in Chinese culture and teas, and has studied the art of the Chinese tea ceremony in Taiwan”. “Our goal is to introduce and present the Chinese tea drinking culture to the neighbourhood,” Daniel concluded.
