Some people sing in the shower, while others gather to unite their voices. For more than ten years, the Polumnia Choir has been attached to the NDG community centre, but thinks are changing. Though the mixed choir will keep rehearsing at the community centre, it will now be independent.

“The centre attracts many people, but they don’t necessarily want to stay long,” explains Rose Marie Bernaquez, who leads the choir. Instead of having people joining only for a semester, she wants to organize auditions each September and have more stability in the group.

Rose Marie Bernaquez wants to create two levels: adult choir and advanced choir. “We are going to make big efforts to recruit because we want a bigger group”, she said.

In order to show people what being part of the choir is about, on Friday May 29, Bernaquez organised an open door rehearsal, saying others will follow.

Ten singers from the choir came at the rehearsal, hoping to interest their audience. They all joined the choir because they love singing and working as a group. “There’s a feeling with the group that I love and even though there are a few rules to respect, they are not too demanding,” said Aimée Bouzaglou, who has been in the choir for 10 years. “Being in a choir means a lot of practice. Each of us is like a musical instrument and when we get together it creates the song”, said Karina Daigle, who joined the group last September. “What I like about the choir is the harmony it creates”, said Alexandre Chekroun, who joined last September. “I like the ambiance of the group, the rehearsals relax me, and little by little the voices improve”, said Louise Rancourt, who just completed her fifth year in the choir. <@Ri>A Spring concert by Polumnia and the group of women at St. Bruno de Vimont will be taking place on June 13, at 8 p.m. at the St. Bruno Parish, 2287, Aladin Street, in Vimont, Laval.
