The employment situation in NDG motivated the opening of a new office of Le Trait d’union employment centre, which will offer free and personalized bilingual employment services, starting July 1st. “There is a market and an important need from people living in the neighborhood,” explained Lise Langlois, director of the Regroupement de l'Ouest de Montreal for Emploi Québec. The center focuses on unemployed people ages 35 and older, which represents 38,3% of NDG’s population. “We are here to serve NDG residents,” said Marilou Bolduc, the NDG office’s assistant director. “NDG is a crossroads for new immigrants and, often, those who are 35 years old don’t have any services that cater specifically to them,” said Marlene Jennings, MP for NDG-Lachine. She also said that with Le Trait d’union being only five minutes away from where she works, it’s inevitable that “a synergy will be created between the two offices.” To help NDG residents find a job, Le Trait d’union will offer three services: Employment Services (SAE), The Démarcheurs Program and Les Déjeuners branchés sur l’emploi Program.
