Earth Day program and activities from the Environmental Club activities and ERC classes further enlighten student body about the importance of saving the earth
Herzliah Snowdon students celebrated Earth Day on April 22 by learning more about global warming and recycling as presented by the school’s dynamic Environmental Club. Special guest speaker and Herzliah alumnus, Côte St Luc Municipal Counselor, Steven Erdelyi, also explained that city’s new organic waste collection program, which is the first of its kind Quebec.
In place for three years and inspired by teacher Dan Saragosti, Herzliah’s Environmental Club has been growing stronger each year as more and more students take on the cause of saving the planet. Some environmental activities have included the initiation of an in-school recycling program, the amazing green race ecological scavenger hunt, participation in the international 1000 acts of green program, a recycling program for old electronics, a field trip to the St. Michel Environmental Complex and the sale of reusable water bottles to discourage use of plastic. In addition, through the ERC program (ethics, religion and culture), teachers Martine Nantais and Sylvia Lubienietzky, held photography and film competitions on this critical issue and teacher Nabil Andraos is working with his classes on recommending ways to maximize the efficiency of water consumption in the school.
According to Secondary V students, Arielle Elkrief and David Silber, “All of these initiatives are really important because they are for our future well-being… awareness of the importance of taking are of the environment is very important and we must all remember to reduce, reuse and recycle.”
