NDG Baseball will once again be represented at the national level this year as the junior Lynx were 6-2 winners over Rouyn-Noranda in last evening’s provincial championship game.

The Lynx will now move on to Little League Canada's Junior National Championship in Langley, BC, from Aug. 6 through 12.

The winners of the Canadian nationals will then move on to the Junior League World Series in Taylor, MI.

At the minor level, the Lynx played tough against their opponents from Valleyfield yesterday in Brossard, losing 4-1 in extra innings in the championship game for the 9-10-year-old age group.

In major action, the Lynx lost 2-1 to Valleyfield in a close semi-final game in Drummondville, while the NDG Senior Lynx fell yesterday as well 6-4 to Valleyfield.

A softball fundraiser #1

The local Girls Summer Softball League will host its second-annual fundraising All-Star game on Sunday, Aug. 9 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Côte St. Luc’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau Park.

With all proceeds going to the Israel Cancer Research Fund’s pediatric oncology initiatives, the game is certainly for a great cause - last year it raised over $18,000. “The barbecue, pizza, and sweet treats will start at 5 p.m. and the event will commence with a Mothers vs. Mothers game at 6 p.m.,” explained event co-organizer Lindsay Sacks. “It followed by the actual All-Star game at 7p.m. with a raffle going on the entire time throughout the event. “Our raffle is quite impressive this year offering a week free at Sunny Acres Day Camp, an HP Laptop with an estimated at a retail value of $2,100, and many other fun prizes. Families are encouraged to come!” For information about donations please email Sacks at lindsaysacks@hotmail.com.

Softball fundraiser #2

My wife Johanna and I had the pleasure of playing the first-ever Homerun for a Cure event last Sunday at Trudeau park, with eight teams competing and coming together to raise money to fight MS.

One of my best friends was diagnosed with MS last year, so this is obviously something we hold very close to our hearts and we’re proud to have participated in an event that raised close to $40,000 for MS research.

I’ll be sure to publicize this event as much as possible leading up to the second-annual edition next year.

Softball fundraiser #3 We’ll also have the honour of playing in the annual Dollard league tournament next weekend, which raises funds for cancer research in honour of former player Bernie Duplantie. This isn’t a local West End event, but obviously it’s for a cause that touches everyone. Please contact me directly for information or to find out how to contribute at the email at the bottom of this column. It seems like there are a lot of events going on to raise money for one good cause or another. What I think is important is that people contribute to something in some way – these might not be where you want to put your money, but I can tell you that running around for a few hours and doing something that actually helps people at the same time is quite rewarding. Please contact me any time for more info or to comment on this column at noahsidel@gmail.com.
